Greetings from the Principal The trophy cases display the many achievements of the FES students.

On behalf of the staff and students of Franklin Elementary School, welcome to our web site.

Our PK-6th grade school, nestled on the hillside overlooking Franklin, is rich in tradition and culture. We have a predominately veteran staff serving our student population of over 300.

We are excited as we begin a new school year. We have expanded our PK program this year by adding a preschool class that is a collaborative effort between Pendleton County Schools and Head Start. We have also hired several new personnel to replace transfers or retirements. We welcome each to our school and feel fortunate to have such qualified personnel in our school. We also welcome new students, representing various grade levels to our school.

Upon entering our school, we hope you feel welcome and find our school to be a safe, caring, and positive environment. It is our mission to work hard to provide success for all students.

School Location

Franklin Elementary School is located in the center of the rural, scenic community of Franklin, West Virginia, Pendleton's county seat. The area, known as the Potomac Highlands, is widely known for its tourist attractions as well as a great place for trout fishing, hunting and camping. The area is mainly agricultural with sheep, cattle, and poultry as the main sources of income. The school is nestled on a hill overlooking the town with the mountains as a scenic backdrop.

To the Students at FES Kindergarten classroom at Franklin Elementary School.
You are now a member of one of the best elementary schools in West Virginia. Take pride in it. It is your home for seven hours a day for this year.

Here are a few ways you can use your school time to the best advantage, which will help you prepare for the middle and high school and future years.

1. Attend school regularly. Attendance is a key to good grades.
2. Arrive at school on time and arrive at all classes on time. Tardiness leads to many other problems.
3. Regularly and carefully prepare assignments.
4. Protect school property and equipment. Help students stamp out vandalism. Respect your school!
5. Support school activities as far as your time, interests and funds will permit.
6. Respect the rights and privileges of others.
7. Accept the responsibilities that come with citizenship at Franklin Elementary School.
8. Be a good sport — let your school spirit show through good sportsmanship at all events. Sportsmanship is the main theme of the West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission and the main theme of the Pendleton County Elementary Athletic Policy.
9. Be a lady or gentleman at all times.
10. Adhere to all discipline measures at all times.
11. Academically strive to do your best in all content standards.
12. Academically strive to do your best on all state mandated tests (WESTEST).

Absences and Make-up Work

West Virginia State law is very explicit on student absences. Normally, students may not be absent from school except for personal illness, death in the family, or extreme hardship. Parents should phone the school office if a child is going to be absent for an extended period of time. Arrangements can be made for homework to be sent home, and in some cases homebound instruction. On returning to school, if a child's activities are to be restricted, a note from the family doctor stating the dates of restriction will be required. It is the student's responsibility following an absence to make the necessary arrangements with teachers for makeup work. This is modified somewhat for lower elementary students. Students who are suspected of being absent without a valid reason, will be referred to the county attendance officer. All FES students are governed by the Pendleton County School Board Attendance Policy. A copy of this eleven-page policy will be sent home with all students.

Truancy is defined as a student staying away or skipping school without leave. Lunch detention or after school detention will be assigned if a student is truant.

Early Dismissals

It is understandable that there will be times that a student must leave school before the end of the regular school day for doctor's appointments or other urgent family business. Parents should make a sincere effort not to schedule appointments for their children during school. However, when this is not possible, students will have to present a note written and signed by their parent, explaining why the student should be excused early. The parent should personally pick the child up from school by reporting to the school office. No child will be permitted to leave school with anyone other than the parent unless prior arrangements have been made between the parent and the school office. NOTE: Unless it is an emergency or an appointment, parents are asked to leave students in class until the school day ends.
