For children already in school, referrals for specialized services can be made by teachers, counselors, principals & parents. Parents may request services by contacting Carrie Nesselrodt, Director of Student Services at (304) 358-2207 ext. 99323.
Title I Teachers provide supplemental education in reading & math to those elementary level students who need assistance. At the middle school & elementary schools, gifted programs allow exceptional students to engage in challenging educational experiences. There is also a school-to-work program, providing education opportunities for students to formulate employment goals through job shadowing.

The Individual Education Program (IEP)
The Individual Education Program (IEP) is the heart of the planning process for the special education student. It is a plan that is developed by you & other members of the IEP team to address your child's strengths & needs.
Related services are specific support services provided for students with disabilities to help them benefit and be successful in their special education instructional program.

PUBLIC NOTICE: The Pendleton County Schools Department of Special Education will be destroying the confidential records that have been maintained for students that were tested to determine their eligibility to receive services as exceptional students. Records will continue to be kept on all students who are now in school. All confidential records of students placed in Special Education Programs are maintained for six (6) years after the student exits the school system. We are currently destroying records on students who graduated in 2010 through 2019.
Federal and state laws require that we provide public notification of our intent to destroy these records and that we provide the opportunity for students and their parents/guardians to review these records prior to their destruction. We will begin this process on May 1, 2020. If you have any questions or wish to review/receive records, please contact Malynda Selmon at (304)358-7065 ext. 126.
FREE SUPPORT & TRAINING FOR PARENTS
OF STUDENTS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS
WV Parent Training & Information (WVPTI)
A non-profit parent organization committed to improving the lives and education of ALL children through a special emphasis on children and youth with all disabilities and special healthcare needs.
WVPTI is the state's designated Parent Training and Information Center (PTI) and receives funding from the federal Department of Education Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP). They serve parents and families of a child or youth from birth to age twenty-six with special needs.

The mission of the West Virginia University Center for Excellence in Disabilities is to improve the lives of West Virginians with disabilities by supporting more diverse, inclusive communities.
As a federally designated University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (UCEDD), we are part of a national network of similar centers across the country and serve as a resource to the community in the areas of education, research and service as it relates to the needs of people with disabilities.

WV Parent Teacher Association (WVPTA)
In addition to their vast parent resources, the WVPTA provides a free toolkit that helps make sense of an often confusing system and educates families of newly diagnosed children with special needs on how to get the best special education, services and resources available to them.
