Pendleton County Schools recently became aware of private social media messages exchanged between two individuals, one of whom served as a citizen coach (a non-full-time position) within our school system. In those messages, the coach repeatedly used racist and threatening language.
We were shocked and disturbed during our review of the messages. This language and behavior do not reflect the values or expectations of Pendleton County Schools. Our school system is committed to fostering an environment of respect, dignity, and inclusion for all students, families, and members of our community.
Because this conduct is unequivocally inconsistent with those values, the individual is no longer serving as a citizen coach within Pendleton County Schools. Immediate action was taken to end the individual’s services in that role.
We sincerely apologize to the family who was directly impacted by these messages. While the messages were communicated in the individual’s personal capacity using private social media or technology, they nonetheless cast an unwanted shadow on our school system given his former coaching role.
Pendleton County Schools also apologizes to our employees and community members who work every day to uphold the values of respect, dignity, and inclusion that define our schools.

On Friday (3/6), Pendleton County Middle/High School will be participating in the West Virginia School Learning Environment Student Survey. The purpose of this survey is to gather valuable student feedback that will help us continue improving our school and ensuring that PCMHS is a positive, supportive place for students to learn and for teachers to work.
Students were given a passive consent form on February 20th. This form only needs to be signed and returned if you do not want your child to participate in the survey.
We appreciate your continued support as we work together to make Pendleton County Middle/High School the best it can be for all of our students. Thank you.
